Not being a hugely overzealous home improvement person, I decided I didn’t want to spend a ton of money for a mitre saw. Like most of my other tools, I wanted something that was very functional for most household uses. So, while I was out at Lowe’s one day, I got to comparing a couple of the inexpensive mitre saws. The three main “cheaper” brands were the Skil, Hitachi
and Kobalt.

Have you ever worked on something that required wood screws and for some reason, you decided to move to a larger woodscrew? If this plan works in the end, perfect! However, I have recently come across a situation where I needed to go back to the smaller screw. The problem is, after the larger screw was screwed in, it ate away all the wood that the smaller wood screw would need. Therefore, the hole was stripped for the smaller screw.

I don’t know why I thought a chisel for the hinge mortises would be better than using the Ryobi Laminate Router
! I am not a woodworker in any way, but to this point, this router/trimmer as been extremely useful. I am certain it could not stand up to the really tough wood routing tasks, but it can stand on its own fairly well depending on the job.

It’s inevitable that at some point, we will all have a hole somewhere in our home that we need to patch up. The bad news itself is the simple inconvenience and blemished wall if it’s in an obvious area. The good news is, this is really easy to fix. The even better news is, it’s easy enough to fix and make look like there was never a hole in the drywall in the first place!

In most cases, a deck is a desirable location for many outdoor activities. Decks are great for family get togethers, children’s birthday parties, cookouts among many other possibilities. Decks can add a lot of character to a yard and provide a place of meditation to help relax while drinking a hot cup of joe. But let’s be honest here…how much character does a deck add to a yard when its wood is faded, sun dried and rotted? In a lot of instances, folks do not have decks simply because they do not want to maintain one. It’s not that difficult and it is very inexpensive, it just takes a little time and elbow grease to keep the deck looking like you just finished building it.

This will of course be my first review because it is the first and only set of power tools I have. I bought the Ryobi ONE+ 18V Starter Kit
strictly for use around the house and not as heavy usage tools. My opinion of the intended use however, has now changed!

36x30x12 Bookshelf
This project was a ton of fun for me. My wife is a teacher and she had these old beat up metal cheap bookshelves. She brought them home one day to paint them. I commented how bad they looked and she said, “if you think you can build some better, then do it”. There was a seperate disclosure thrown in after I got underway on the first bookshelf. She says, “if you can build one, you have to build 4″. So, that’s just what I did. It’s a very easy project. It was easy enough that I went on to build a 5′ x 5′ x 12″ one. Granted, these are not extremely detailed, or anything you might find in some fine furniture store. They are sturdy, quality shelves that look decent and will last. I imagine with a little more time and attention to detail these would be very nice!

I am so sorry it’s been such a long time since I have posted. I am almost done with school, though. This means much more time doing projects and more time to post about them!

At a later time, I will do a post on installing interior slab doors. For the time being however, I am going to explain the science behind mortising for hinges and strike plates. The main reason for needing to mortise hinges or strike plates comes down to cost, really. I will cover that in more detail when I cover the post of installing a slab door.

Recently, we replaced carpet throughout most of the house with laminate. When we pulled up the carpet, we noticed a huge crack running right through the middle of the living room. This did alarm us a little. So, we called our realtor to get some information on what we were looking at. She called a foundation repair company to come out and take a look.
